Digha
The southern western coast of West Bengal is endowed with the most famous beaches and tourist spots on the eastern coast of India – Digha located south west of Calcutta about 187 kms from the city. Originally known as Beerkul, Digha was discovered in the late 18th century by the British rulers, who mentioned the place as the "Brighton of the East". Digha has a low gradient with a shallow sand beach where gentle waves extends 7 kms in length. The beach town is famous all over for flat, hard beaches. The sea at Digha is calm and shallow for about a mile from the beach making it quite safe for swimming. The scenic beauty of this place are something straight off an artist's easel.

Shankarpur
Shankarpur has been recently discovered and is fast gaining popularity amongst the tourists. Just 14 Kms away from its more famous counterpart Digha, the place offers nearly all the pleasures of a private beach. Shankarpur has a large stretch of un-polluted beach and also a regular fishing harbor. It is twin beach of Digha and like it, this beach too is cupped with casuarina groves. The sea at at Shankarpur is placid and safe for swimming. This place now boasts itself as a complete tourist destination with hotels, tourist lodges and other facilities for a relaxing holiday with family.

Mandarmani
Mandarmani is another new destination, about 187 km and five hours away from Kolkata. It is a 13 km long motorable beach, probably the longest beach road in India. Away from the crowd, the beach will definitely give you a chance to feel divinity and tranquility. Mandarmani is the most a wonderful virgin beach in the east coast of India, and the presence of the resorts here adds to the comfort factor of this picture perfect tourist destination. Junput Junput is another beach resort of West Bengal, though the beach here is exposed only when the tide ebbs. A 40 km. drive from Digha will take you to this beautiful beach with a change at Contai. This place is filled with beautiful sea-view and lines of casuarina trees. Junput is famous for Brackish water fish cultivation. Junput's unspoilt beach offers enough of lazing in the sun and abundance of fun filled activities. Its beach has been lavishly gifted by the nature and is reckoned as the paradise for beach lovers.

Sagardwip
Sagardwip, about 128 Kms from Kolkata offers a perfect repose for a weekend combining both pilgrimage and fun. A small island in Sunderban, piligrims from all over the country collect at Sagardwip to take a holy dip at the confluence of the river Ganga and the Bay of Bengal. It holds a complete charm of an unspoilt beach pleated with the rolling waves and warm sun and its light house offers a panoramic view of the surroundings.

Travel Information

Digha is easily accessible by road from Kolkata, Bardhaman, Durgapur, Asansol, Suri, Bankura etc., and also partly by rail (upto Kharagpur). The trip between Kharagpur and Digha (123 km.) has to be done by bus and taxi. Mandarmani is well connected to Kolkata/Howrah by a highway and can also be covered from a day excursion from Digha.

Bus Services : Frequent buses are available from morning to evening. Digha is 187 km. by road from Kolkata.

By Train : Direct train upto Digha (from Shalimar).

By Air : Nearest airport- NSC Bose International Airport (Kolkata).
